Russell has a seven-year itch when it comes to solo recordings. Fluid Architecture follows 2013's excellent Now More Than Ever and the 2006 tribute to his hero Gil Evans, Goodbye, Svengali. But of course there's also been wild-eyed collaborations with the likes of Henry Kaiser. So rumours in these pages that Russell somehow abandoned jazz decades ago for a lucrative sessions career just ain't right.
Indeed, ‘One For Geoff’, Russell's poignant acoustic elegy for Geoff Castle, reminds us his work with the jazzing keys man spanned over 50 years. Likewise his compadres on Fluid (notably the epic-lifed Mo Foster) have shared his vision for decades. So there's a nice irony in the title of the killer riffed trio jam ‘We Go Back A Short Way!’
It's all summed by ‘Escaping from the Six Stringed Cage’, a mini-suite of Russellania, moving from pitch-shifting blues to Rypdal-like cinematic swooshes, to bolshy beats and back again. Enjoy and savour though because you may have to wait until 2027 for the follow up. Stone me, these part timers…
