Red Kite play a kind of wide-ranging, atomised fusion, meshing styles from noir score to reggae while instruments orbit in separate atmospheres, the space between them a tangible presence. Danish composer and co-producer Esben Tjalve is responsible for this studio ambience, which sees the band gradually materialise and coalesce like cosmic dust during opener ‘In Line’, before Fulvio Sigurta’s trumpet rips through the resulting, even pulse. Through-composed with improv sections, this is music for a group of unreduced individuals.
Phronesis bassist Jasper Høiby is the star name in a diverse sextet left oddly uncredited on the CD, but Sigurta’s varied uses demonstrate Tjalve’s titular array of instrumental colours: gently elegiac on ‘Interstellar’, a braying interloper in the playful reggae of ‘The Meeting’, swaggeringly shouldering through the bustling mean streets of ‘The Detective’, conversational over the Latin shuffle of ‘Night Owls’, and soul-funk forceful on ‘Silver Fox’.
The bandleader’s piano is used sparingly till the closing ‘Ritual’, where Theory of Colours’ emphasis on stately, lapping undulations, atmosphere and restraint reaches a sort of climax. For all its ambient interest and stylistic shifts, though, the overall effect can be indistinct.
