Abbasi's never lacked the courage to explore different musics, so the name of his new band, Junction, is most apt as a meeting place for jazz, rock and eastern influences. Perhaps best known for collaborations with Vijay Iyer and Rudresh Mahanthappa, his new coalition may not be so starry, but it compensates for that in a shared ethos and energy. Unashamedly electric, in contrast to his acoustic quartet (RAAQ), Behind The Vibration features the keys of Stivers as much as Abbasi's knotty lines; so we have his chunky Rhodes on ‘Self-Brewing’, or the B3 surges on ‘Groundswell’, apparently inspired by the Arab Spring. The absence of a bass gives space for Stivers’ keys to lay down low-end textures against which Abbasi builds long lines recalling Holdsworth at his best. Shim also uses a wind-controller to put down bottom end vibes, most obviously on ‘Holy Butter’ which owes something to Abbasi's appreciation of Indian dance. When the band takes off on its more epic shapings they intriguingly recall Rush, which may wrong foot those who prefer their jazz less rockist. Hopefully this is a project with legs that Cuneiform will strive to keep together.
