Can a man and his music be too happy? From the rippling hi-life rhythms that kick off Riser’ s opening cut, ‘Night Songs’, to the ringing acoustic colours of the title track, Luft's music has an easeful joy that is never smug or facile but simply rich with the joy of making music with others, for others. It helps to have on board Webb's equally positive keys, whether haunting on the dub zephyrs of ‘Dust Settles’ or mildly Cowley-esque on ‘Blue White and Dreaming’ (there's a lot of dreaminess in Luft World, but where would we be without dreams?). Thankfully Luft also had the musical nous to bring on board Wright's squally sax, nicely chewy on the title-track and birdsong strong on ‘We are All Slowly Leaving’. Luft, by his own admission, is still learning and you don't want to big up someone too soon, but it's in the composition, arrangements and vision that Luft's skills lie as equally as they do in his technical facility. Which is why Riser is hopefully the start of a long – and happy – story.
