Chicagoan cornet player Mazurekadopts the dense collage style sosuccessfully sustained by MatanaRoberts during her acclaimed CoinCoin series, but on this doubledisc he relinquishes her moreprofoundly earthly concerns forfantastical extra-terrestrial terrain. Outer space has always beenthe place for more adventurousjazz adventurers; from Sun Ra torecent works by Darius Jones andNicole Mitchell (the latter's dolefulflutes and banshee-like wailsalso appear here), and Mazurekdraws on the Afro-futurismnarratives of sci-fi scribes OctaviaButler and Samuel R Delaneyto nurture his own dystopicpost-apocalyptic visions. It's anambitious set stretched acrosstwo live performances – one inSardegna, Italy and a homecomingin Illinois – that juxtaposessnippets of spoken word and theidiomatic amalgams of AACM, while flaunting Mazurek's masteryof muggy tropical moods on cutslike ‘Collections Of Time’. Butthroughout Galactic Parables:Volume 1, its many vicissitudesand formations, it's the cosmicpresence of one particular starchaser, the man formerly known asHerman Blount, that radiates like asupernova within the interplanetaryobsidian, burning like a beacon, beckoning on his true believers.
