This Mexican acoustic rock duo has gone from busking on the streets of Dublin to selling out cavernous venues everywhere from London to LA; their mesmerising playing and astounding synchronicity has variously seen them sell in excess of 1.2million records, work with the likes of Al Di Meola and Metallica and soundtrack bits of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Just when it seemed they'd gone as far as they could go, Rod and Gab went to Cuba. The resultant Area 52 isn't too much of a departure: the duo's heavy metal aesthetic is still to the fore. But backed by C.U.B.A, a 13-piece orchestra comprising some of Havana's finest young players, and with arrangements by redoubtable Swiss-based Latin jazz pianist Alex Wilson, their music takes on a different, richer dimension. A host of guest artists – including sitarist Anoushka Shankar, jazz bassist Carles Benavent and oud trio Le Trio Joubran – overcook what's already well done. But this is a fabulous effort, regardless.
