In a world of ever-shifting musical and political sands, there's something reassuring about Beaujolais' up-tempo, swinging sounds. Although this is Beaujolais' first quartet recording (Mark Lockheart having gone on his separate compositional odyssey), this is still very much the band of the last 15 years, but now with more space for the ever-melodic Aspland and the vibes to stretch out. What is also new is a Brazilian vibe, as on the languid groove of Milton Nascimento's ‘Vera Cruz’, the closing hip-sway of ‘Estate’ and Beaujolais' own ‘Joe Beam’. A couple of Wes Montgomery tunes, ‘West Coast Blues’ and the opening ‘Full House’ also a reveal the bluesy feel that underwrites much of Mind The Gap, although the driving urgency of Corea's ‘Sea Journey’ has a harder edge. Alternatively, the luminous intro to ‘A Child Is Born’ has the minimalist, time-stood-still feel of Beaujolais' work with Lushlife and BJ Cole. Swinging and deeply enjoyable, take time out to savour Mind The Gap.
