Guilfoyle is a leading Dublin-based bassist and educator who tours internationally and indeed appeared with his quintet at the 2009 LJF. Released by a non-Irish label, this album is dedicated to his late dad, responsible not only for the liberal-arts upbringing of Ronan and drummer Conor, but also for playing them a childhood diet of recorded jazz. The opening track contrasts unaccompanied passages of ‘modern-classical’ string writing with increasingly ‘jazzy’ sections of solo Abercrombie. The two elements are then blended in different ways from the second track (named ‘Mr. BP’, it's not a reference to the present reviewer, or indeed to Bud Powell, but to the father's forenames). The closing title,‘2 Degrees East’, is of course half (or perhaps 40 per cent) of a John Lewis title, but this is no straightahead blues-rather, a 14-minute composition that incorporates disguised variations of Lewis’ theme. Like the rest of the album, it's an absorbing listen, both thought-provoking and pleasurable.
