In post-war Europe, the 10-inch LPs of which two (Roy Eldridge & His ‘Little Jazz’ and Jour Pour La Danse) make up this reissue, had a period charm about them. Not just the familiar red, black and white Disque Vogue label and Pierre Merlin illustrations, but the general excitement displayed by the local Paris set who suddenly found themselves in the same studio as leading visiting American artists. Some of the locals might not have been quite as adept as the visitors, but this was partly compensated by their efforts to impress. Often seen as the logical bridge between Louis and Dizzy, Pittsburg-born Eldridge exhibited the same degree of humour and a feisty stance that made him such a favourite wherever he set up shop. Incidentally, the Louis connection takes in ‘Fireworks’ and ‘Wild Man Blues’, both included here for good measure.
