The process of reissuing material from the French labels Vogue and Swing through Sony began with the monumental 20CD set Jazz From America (reviewed in Jazzwise 204). Looking back, it's instructive how often US sidemen were able to record under their own names in Europe long before they had such an opportunity back home. So Haynes, while in the backing trio of Sarah Vaughan, visited the Continent (and even this sceptered isle, but only for the personnel at US air-bases!) and made three separate albums in four weeks. This particular session included a couple of American expatriates in guitarist Gourley and baritonist Cameron, along with the 17-year-old Wilen (later known for his contribution to Lift To The Scaffold) and de facto producer Renaud. Despite some West Coast-ish French arrangements, Haynes is well-featured and well-recorded. When the sextet session was previously on CD (Vogue 74321115122), it was coupled with Kenny Clarke's first date after moving permanently to Paris – which made some kind of sense – while here the ‘bonus’ trio tracks led by Jimmy Jones do have Haynes, but are rather bland interpretation of standards.
