The busy and versatile trumpeter has assembled a fine band of like-minded musicians. Enlisting Penn, described by Drummerworld as “one of the most sought after drummers of his generation”, is a major coup. Quigley gives him a showcase with ‘The Long Journey Home’ and Penn is happy to lead the way. With Janisch's characteristic rhythmic push and Penn's drive it's no surprise that the horns have a head-start in launching their solos. Not that they need it. Quigley and Booth are players of clarity, and forceful with it. They are great individually but sometimes at their best when jousting together. Hamilton is always tasteful and always in the right place, discretely supportive when that is needed, stepping fully and assuredly into the spotlight when it's his turn. Compositions like these – strongly made hard bop in the main, with a little electric fusion here and there – are in fairly plentiful supply these days, but playing as classy as this lifts them that vital step above the rest.
