Sabrina Malheiros continues to sashay her way to stardom. Dreaming, her third quite excellent album, is as its title suggests: a lovely soft focus take on the every-burgeoning nu-bossa movement – but with enough sharp edges to keep it young and fresh. As the daughter of Alex Malheiros, bass player with Brazilian psychedelic jazz legends Azymuth, Sabrina is of course to the manor born. Here, however, the London-based Rio-minded chanteuse picks up from where her previous acclaimed albums Equilibria and New Morning left off and swerves even more confidently into her own musical territory. Nu-Rio, classic Brazil and Zeitgeist-friendly, dub-steppy electronica vie and blend on songs that variously soothe and groove, chill-out (the swoonsome ‘Bobeira’) and wig-out (the 1970s style acid-folky ‘Lirio de Venus’). Her dad is on board, of course, as are the stellar likes of samba percussionist Robertinho Silva and Joyce's pianist Alfredo Cardim. Malheiros’ partner Daniel ‘Venom’ Maunick does an excellent production job, the melodic acoustic guitar and rich vocals of Malheiros herself are a veritable aural balm.
