Curiously, perhaps, Pink Floyd haven't spread their influence across the jazz world, although Sam Yahel's Jazz Side of the Moon was an ingenious stab at reinterpreting The Dark Side of the Moon. This Italian trio likewise start with that classic composition, working from a core sound of bass, percussion and sax. Around this they layer ethereal electronics, which build an ambient vibe around Bardoscia's warm bass. This trio also choose to take on vocals, which pitches this recording somewhere between the brave and the downright foolhardy. Nobili's ‘recitation’ of the ‘The Great Gig in The Sky’ jars, as does Salvodelli's growling presence. As for the attempt to recreate Clare Torry's delirious vox, oooh, let's not go there. And just when you want to give them credit for avoiding guitars (heh, who dares to mimic Dave Gilmour?) up lurches a wearisome meander on ‘Us and Them’. There are moments of moody angst, but it's all strangely limp, despite Casarano's sulky sax.
