There's the breath of something fresh about Newbould's new release which follows swiftly upon his acclaimed debut Blencathra.
Whether it reflects the windy vistas of his Yorkshire Dales upbringing or the cosmopolitan sophistication of his current home in Amsterdam, Bogus Notus has a sense of balance between the spacious and the detailed. A song like ‘Left Side of the Cove' may start with a whispered, piano-led intimacy but will soon change gear into a Latin sheen or swing sudden into a boppish groove.
There are swampy, Mingus-y vamps like ‘Carried to the Common', replete with squally tenor and then we'll helterskelter down the ‘Right Side of the Cove' to ship up on the unexpected but welcome calms of the folkish ‘Song for Anne'.
There's space a plenty for Newbould's pals, and indeed one of the few carps about this release is that we don't hear enough of his own searching sax. But it's the generosity of this music, its ensemble storytelling, that gives Bogus Notus its gentle power. The whole indeed is greater than the parts. Nothing bogus in that.
