Duality, from New York-based, Lebanese-Canadian drummer Sanah Kadoura continues on a mission she began with 2018 debut Hawk Eyes: to cover as much musical ground as she can. Duality is inspired by the balance between light and dark, but there's much more than two warring concepts on a release featuring almost everything you might expect from a 21st century jazz album. Dilla grooves, Glasper-esque piano rumbling, high-wire lyrical balladry, chilled backbeats, some really tricky heads with nods to Charlie Parker, a brief exploration of her Lebanese heritage, lots of wordless improvisations…
It's a packed album, buoyed by contributions from a group of musicians determined to make their mark through busy solos, though the more memorable moments are when Kadoura turns to her Lebanese background for inspiration, like the lithely unpredictable ‘Zaytoon’, featuring Parham Haghighi's understated vocals. With so much happening, it's a bit of a struggle to keep a big group all on the same page, but Kadoura has more than enough energy to keep on top of it. A versatile voice worth keeping an eye on.
