There is no finer exponent of what became known as latin rock than Carlos Santana, who in live performance can be positively life enhancing, seemingly able to move mountains at will. Although his career goes back to the 1960s, since when he has sold in excess of 100 million records, he is still able get in the zone and create genuine musical magic. Recreating that magic in the studio, however, is a difficult mojo to work, and on the 13 tracks of this, his 36th album (only one track has vocals), he comes close. Maybe audiences have something to do with this, and although he has not been touring recently, he has just taken up a two-year residency at Las Vegas' House of Blues. It would be interesting to hear this album shaken down in live performance, recorded live a year-in to that residency. I suspect it might just get five stars.
