Misty brings together two superb Vaughan albums. The first, Vaughan and Violins, was recorded in Paris in 1958 with an orchestra that included tenor saxist Zoot Sims, bassists Richard Davis and Pierre Michelot, and drummer Kenny Clark, conducted and arranged by the 25-year-old Quincy Jones. Whether it's the gently chiming harp and vibes in ‘The Midnight Sun Will Never Set’ or the sweeping strings in ‘Gone With The Wind’, Jones' arrangements frame Vaughan's heart-stoppingly beautiful voice in the most apposite way. Also included in its entirety is the bonus album, Close to You, recorded the year after Vaughan and Violins in New York with Fred Norman and his orchestra. While some may find the (uncredited) backing vocalists a slightly cloying presence, Vaughan's majestic sound carries all before it. Of the three additional tunes included here which didn't appear on the original L P, ‘Please’ sees Vaughan delivering a sustained line of quite glorious sound. The 12-page CD booklet includes rare photos, original cover art, plus both new and original liner notes. This outstanding reissue serves to confirm that, purely in terms of timbral beauty, Sarah Vaughan remains nonpareil.
