This is a very pleasant album that does not jar or shock but goes about its business in a very professional manner. Mid-Atlantic jazz that looks both ways, to Europe and the States, navigating a course that shows American ex-pat and now Icelandic resident McLemore's allegiance to pro-active drumming (‘Secrets of Earth’, ‘Remote Location’). Many compositions contain, to use Charles Lloyd's term, “elixirs” of the Munich based ECM label. This bi-lateral affinity produces a largely serene series of compositions, such as ‘Citizen Sitting Zen’ and ‘Charlottesville’. Tenor saxophonist Guojonsson has a beautiful tone, ideally suited to this music, while McLemore's wife Gunnlaugs finally has something to say on ‘Working’. While McLemore occasionally becomes overburdened by the necessity to ‘play’ the drums and so loses subtlety in favour of explicitness, he generally works well within the parameters of the compositions in what is a good average jazz album.
