Unfolding like a jazz-dappled soundtrack for staring through rain-streaked windows, strolling through crunching auburn leaves, or admiring a frosty exhaled breath, multi-instrumentalist Adam Scrimshire encapsulates the melancholy joys of autumn.
From the breathy mellotron sighs of opener ‘Hawthorn’ to the cycling, plucked acoustic guitar chords of ‘Hazel’ – that expands out into a reverberated psychedelic lolloping groove – the instrumentation sympathetically matches the mood. Flashes of Henri Mancini and even the spaced out 1960s styled work of Goldfrapp producer Will Gregory surface on the languorous ‘Sweet Chestnut’, not least thanks to acoustic guitars being juxtaposed to mournful analogue synths in a satisfying low-key contrast.
Scrimshire’s previous work includes producing several leading UK neo-soul acts, but he’s also stepped into more political terrain with his 2023 album Paroxysm, which responded to the absurdity of the breakdown in the UK government. Music For Autumn Lovers is heartfelt, highly detailed music that Adam himself describes as “The feeling of comfort despite the dying leaves and plants around us, making way for new growth” – and it’s that sense of sadness mixed with hope that hits home most.
