Originally recorded when Hawker, Saberton and notably Koral nabbed some studio time out of a commercial session, this set has that slightly breathless sense of a band filling every stolen minute with fun and a feverish sense of urgency. The release is notable in that Koral calls it a tribute to Saberton who lays down typically joyous keys on ‘Crazy Sunday’ and the opening bounce of ‘Feels So Good’. Saberton had a particular feel for backing vocalists, as Mel Tormé, Norma Winstone and the Westbooks could attest, so no surprise here that Hawker sounds so confident against those sprung chords. Koral and Hawker's relationship would likewise go on for decades after this recording which features a mix of originals like the torchy ‘Heroes’ and more predictable covers like ‘Fever’ and ‘Stormy Monday Blues’. And keep an ear out for Laurence Cottle on one of his first recorded sessions, fulsome in feel even three decades ago.
