Did you ever meet someone at a party who was just so polite and inoffensive that you later had trouble remembering a single thing they'd said? There's something of that in this trio, led by Norwegian guitarist Thomas T Dahl. It's partly to do with his tone, which comes across like a sanitised and risk-averse development of Bill Frisell, augmented with touches of prettified fusion-lite and echo-delay indie jangle. And it's partly to do with the arrangements of originals by all three members of the group: basic brush work in 4/4 patterns by Olavi Louhivuori and smooth, oozing bass lines from Mats Eilertsen (who has worked with the equally soporific Tord Gustavsen), combining to create something not unlike 1990s Chicago postrock, with any hint of danger excised. The one cover version on the album seals the deal: an instrumental take on Portishead's ‘Sour Times’ that airbrushes out all of Beth Gibbons’ gloomy angst and replaces it with a cloying excess of melody.
