Multi-reed player Kruglov has been an increasingly influential presence on the Russian, and indeed Baltic scene for the past decade, making notable recordings with anybody from Vladimir Tarasov to Jaak Sooäär. This latest release is a good addition to his discography, and it sizzles away to a satisfying conclusion. There is a subtle but potent chemistry between him, keyboardist Ganelin and drummer Yudanov, which enables them to sustain interest in a freely-improvised setting where ideas continually ebb and flow between the introspective and the incendiary. Many of the fireworks are created by Ganelin's arsenal of old school synths, some of which hark back to Zawinul circa Dialects, and exert an almost innocent charm, particularly the wavy, lumpy Moog bass. It gives the music a kind of seasick swing. Having said that, the electronic textures become a touch on the tinny side on occasion, and the meandering opener ‘That’s Us' could have been wrapped up sooner. However, the trio is pleasingly willing to launch into a number of daring pieces of interplay that are enhanced by some striking individual touches, none more so than Kruglov's audacious mix of ‘slap breath’ and ‘slap tongue’ that provides a vivid counterpoint to the softer strains of Ganelin's piano and Yudanov's whispering snare.
