The six tracks of this third album from Swedish quartet SOL SOL were alternately composed by saxophonist Elin Forkelid and guitarist David Stackenäs. Each is well respected as both composer and free improviser and the tension between those elements as well as their separate stylistic approaches generates a nicely disruptive edge to the band’s sound. The guitarist’s 'If Not, Marbles' proceeds nonchalantly from a lyrical waltz opening to an off-kilter blues that doesn’t quite resolve while guitar and sax wrangle over the possibilities. The title track – another Stackenäs number, overlays a remorselessly hefty rock groove with some free playing reminiscent of Get The Blessing. His third number closes the album with a bang: 'Hello Again, Paul' is almost a five-time grunge reworking of 'Louie Louie' that clearly has to be their live show encore number.

Forkelid’s first contribution 'Elena' opens the album briskly with anthemic sax and guitar preceding a sequence of free interludes characterized by hoarsely impassioned sax and synth-FX guitar. 'The First Days of Spring' is more closely written, with a jaunty upbeat feel, a nimble bass solo and assertive drumming – though it oddly fades out just as Forkelid’s sax takes off for a solo. And there’s a straightforward clarity to 'Can I Have The Bill, Please?' that nods to Bill Frisell or Andy Sheppard with its combination of melodic economy and an unhurriedly spacious arrangement. The number allows drummer Anna Lund and bass player Mauritz Agnas room to gently coax the tune along. All in all – and (almost) all things considered - the album offers an enjoyably varied summation of four stylish players relishing creative difference through collectivity.
