Hot on the heels of the Grammy-winning Anniversary comes the jazziest album yet from the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, the three-time Grammy winning dance music outfit co-founded by pianist Oscar Hernandez in 2003. Reflecting the salsa ensemble's longtime ubiquity at top jazz festivals, and the esteem in which Hernandez and company are held, this seventh release features an array of New York CityA-listers.
Kurt Elling's vocals on Bronislaw Kaper's ‘Invitation’ are a masterclass in dynamic, just so phrasing. Vibes master Joe Locke and flautist Jimmy Bosch, the SHO's very own secret weapon, deliver scintillating solos on Hernandez' ‘Latin Perspective’; bassist Jimmy Haslip slaps and twangs with mathematical precision on the bandleader's ‘Silent Prayers’, a track given texture by David Liebman's velvety sax lines and clavé rhythms played out on cowbell.
Seven of the 11 tracks are by Hernandez and he shows off his chops on a version of Monk's ‘Round Midnight’ that finds trumpeter Jonathan Powell on bold form, setting off phrases, building intensity, with Gene Amato's clever arrangements staving off the Miles comparisons and adding another contender to the canon. ‘Descarga de Jazz’ – with its grooving baritone sax solo by Mitch Forhman – is a freeform explosion of skill and joy, and a fitting closure to an opus that dazzles.
