Here's one to scare the neighbours. As befits a tribute to the late great Tony Williams during his Lifetime era, Spectrum Road kicks off with a mighty, downright vicious ‘Vuelta Abajo’. Each band member has deep connections to Williams, with Blackman particularly hard working in keeping Williams' spirit alive. So it's sad to report that for all the talent and good intentions, much of Spectrum Road, like, indeed, Lifetime's career path, is all over the place. Ironically, it's Medeski, the band member with least connection to Williams who valiantly tries to hold it together with his surging Hammond chords. Medeski wisely avoids sounding anything like Larry Young, though he's suitably ‘cosmic’ on ‘Where’. Bruce puts an atmospheric vocal to ‘An t-Eilan Muileach’, sounding eerily like Robin Williamson, but, hero as Bruce is, even he fails to anchor the bucking and yawing of Reid and Blackman who leave nary the gnat's proverbial crotchet of space for a little soul to seep in. And if Williams had anything, it was soul. Spectrum Road is a spectacular event, but a spectacularly off-the-mark release.
