While Storløkken's iconic status as the keyboards' headbanging wild man is reaffirmed on Elephant9's Psychedelic Backfire – an imminent double hit of abrasive live mayhem – this solo synth suite of arranged improvisations reveals his subtly introspective side. He pulls unnaturally high, aurally challenging frequencies from his often vintage instruments, and never settles into the smooth synth glides of Kraftwerkian cliché, instead leaving a scree of rough surface texture. ‘Stranded at Red Ice Desert. Remember Your Loved Ones (In memory of my dear mother)’ stands out as a lovely, folk-like elegy, finding warm wistfulness in his synth arsenal. ‘Skyrocket Hotel’, too, mines intricate, sharp-edged melodic phrases, as synths fuzzily overload around soft steam hammer beats. ‘Nitro Valley’ has its ominous Geiger counter crackle brightly adorned with harp-like strums and guitar-like plucks. Inevitable if faint echoes of Vangelis's Blade Runner soundtrack are less important than Storløkken's adventures in inner space. His hands-on attitude to once forbiddingly futuristic, artificial instruments traverses a tangible mental landscape.
