In much the same way as both Sinatra and Ella were consummate interpreters of what is commonly referred to as the Great American Songbook, so to was tenor sax supremo Stan Getz. Here was a peerless performer capable of reinvigorating even the most overfamiliar themes such as ‘These Foolish Things’, ‘S’Wonderful’ or the title track ‘Autumn Leaves’, with sensitivity and that truly exquisite breathless signature sound which could be cooler than December or hotter than July. All this was recorded well over a decade before the bossa nova elevated Getz to world star status and is an excellent primer for both newcomers or those interested in his formative solo career. Supported by various rhythm sections sympathetically led by pianists Al Haig, Tony Aless, Horace Silver, Sanford Gold and Duke Jordan, this ticks all boxes. In a programme of constant high points, personally I feel that ‘Moonlight In Vermont’ (with guitarist Johnny Smith) and ‘My Old Flame’ fully encapsulate Getz’s unique skills.
