This is a reissue of the 1982 album of the same name which first appeared on vinyl in Columbia's Contemporary Masters series. Recorded in 1975, it's among just a handful of choice Getz offerings from the 1970s, a period somewhat dominated by his overall output for Columbia which was biased towards the then more commercial instincts of major recording companies common at the time. The Master numbers alongside Captain Marvel, recorded in 1972 with Chick Corea on piano and released in 1975, and two volumes of live recordings taped at the Montmartre in Copenhagen with pianist Joanne Brackeen in 1977 that together represent the highpoint of his recorded work during the decade. Albert Dailey, the pianist on The Master, joined Getz in 1973 and stayed with him for around three years. The saxophonist always spoke highly of him and they enjoyed a close musical relationship, later recording an album of critically acclaimed duets on Bruce Lundvall's Elektra Musician label in 1983. For once, The Master is not a hyperbolic album title, Getz truly was a master, checkout pieces like ‘Lover Man’ and ‘Invitation’ that show him at the top of his game at a time when the chatter of electronic instruments and rock rhythm section patterns seemed to have taken over jazz.
