Stéphane Kerecki, a young double bassist from Paris, has already earned his dues, and has recently recorded in duo with John Taylor as well as on Paris-based pianist Yaron Herman's excellent Alter Ego CD from last year. This is his fourth album since forming this sax-bass-drums trio in 2003. Although that line-up implies a skeletal harmonic base, with the addition of Paris-based Serbian Bojan Z on piano and Rhodes, and high end American saxophonist Tony Malaby (who appeared on Houria, Kerecki's previous 2010 release) this is a quintet in all but name. The self-explanatory ‘Serbian Folk Song’ has Bojan Z in his element and his solos on the album are largely exhilarating. Elsewhere Kerecki's compositions turn more towards a more contemporary post-bop environment. In among some warmly expressed originals that sound something like updated interpretations of late-1960s cosmic jazz sits a gospel-drenched mantra and an Albert Ayler-like spiritual-folk theme. Solos are fresh and purposeful, and when combined, Donarier and Malaby's tenors ooze sensuality while the leader's Scott LaFaro-like bass and Grimmonprez' drums impress with an imaginative, dance-like energy. It's one of the month's best releases.
