Steve Turre says that this session is like a dream come true. He's been around for a long time now, having first come to prominence in the early 1970s with the often over-looked trumpeter Woody Shaw's Quintet. Over the years, he's made loads of albums, most recently for HighNote, but on this Smoke CD, he's been given two of Miles Davis’ most famous surviving sidemen – bassist Ron Carter and drummer Jimmy Cobb – plus arguably the most tasteful of all the veteran pianists, Kenny Barron. The material is pretty straight forward. There are five Turre originals plus Monk's ‘Reflections’, JJ Johnson's ‘Coffee Pot’, Wayne Shorter's ‘United’ (which Steve had recorded for a Woody Shaw album), Antonio Carlos Jobim's ‘Corcovado’ and the standard, ‘When Sunny Gets Blue’. Steve's tunes are largely centred on the blues, with the exception of the CD's title tune, with its sunny uplifting latin groove. It's probably the highspot of the session, which is the epitome of relaxation. A quiet conversation between master musicians. Javon Jackson plays on some titles and makes his presence felt.
