With the exception of Magma, how many French underground bands from the late 1960s can you think of who made any kind of name for themselves? This thoroughly pleasing dose of jazzy psych suggests there might have been more bubbling under across the channel than is generally recognised. Flautist Bernard Wystraete wrote and arranged the music, and supplies plenty of solo action alongside R. Stepzak's stinging electric violin – but, really, it's all about the riffs. ‘Le Voyage’ slips from driving pop-psych into swinging lounge-sounds, with some neat Grant Greenery from A. Bonavita, before embarking on Eastern tinged jazzprog; ‘Prelude No. 1’ comes across like a mash-up of Archie Bell & The Drells’ ‘Tighten Up’ and Sergio Mendes’ ‘Mas Que Nada;’ while ‘Climat’ is a bossa so sun-drenched you’ll need shades to listen to it. Serve with cocktails or a chilled white wine to give your party a touch of va-vavoom.
