This is the fifth album from the trio that Icelandic pianist Sunna Gunnlaugs put together some years ago now with bassist Þorgrímur Jónsson and drummer (and husband) Scott McLemore. The seven tunes, all written by Gunnlaugs, express a desire for travel and complete satisfying little musical journeys in their own right.
Gunnlaugs’ output has been described as a happy conjunction of modernism and tradition, a brand of accessible experimentalism, with the influence of the likes of Bill Evans much in evidence. The compositions on this latest disc are strong and memorable: opener ‘Becoming’ summons a gathering of rhetorical force and combines gospel and blues elements and an affectingly wistful melodic fall, providing opportunities for all three players to shine, not flashily but firmly. ‘Sound of Summer’ raises the tempo and offers solo spots to both Jónsson and McLemore. ‘Make the Jump’ is a really cool piece of contemporary piano trio jazz, while ‘Nicotune’ boasts a lovely, stately bluesy resolve.
