Susanna Wallumrød has created her own unique sound world, and although certain stylistic nuances associated with Solveig Slettahjell remain – she studied under her in the Oslo Conservatory – the context in which she creates for her voice is very much her own. Not one for declamatory statements or fast tempos, she has, since her debut album in 2004, been quietly (how could she do it any other way?) refining her art. Recently, the Norwegian daily Morgenbladet published a list of the best 100 Norwegian albums of all time, as voted by 100 Norwegian musicians, and Susanna had three in the listing. Of course, lists like this are arbitrary, but suggests the cult following she attracts is now growing into a bit of a crowd. Deserved too, as this could well be her best album yet. She has perfected the art of making dark moods seem attractive, and while this album of originals is hardly music to slash your wrists by, their emotional depth (‘Starving Soul’, ‘There Is Nothing Funny About This’ or ‘Lonely Heart’) is moving and affecting, which goes to the heart of her art.
