While the violin has been used extensively in jazz, the same cannot be said for its big brother the viola. That's something Australian fiddler Tamil Rogeon is attempting to rectify on this very satisfying new record. With a deeper, darker tone, the viola can perhaps be thought of as akin to the tenor sax, and Rogeon's solos have a rich and full-bodied sound, which adds to the overall luxuriance unfurled by sumptuous string arrangements and a celestial vocal choir. Fans of Kamasi Washington's unapologetically retro stylings will undoubtedly dig this deep, modal jazz with a gloriously cosmic vibe. Aficionados of vintage keyboard sounds will also find a lot to love: the album is positively dripping in deliciously squelchy synths and Fender Rhodes-style electric piano. Performed with confidence and verve by some of the leading lights on Melbourne's thriving jazz scene, it's feels like a lost mid-70s session from the grittier end of the CTI Records catalogue. What's not to like?
