These musicians have been previously released on the Leo label as three-quarters of a quartet, also featuring Josef Novotny. This time round the pianist has been ‘promoted’ to engineer – but an appealing sense of relaxed familiarity remains. The split-screen cover photo is reminiscent of Mats Gustafsson’s Scandi-skronk trio The Thing, with drummer Fredi Pröll biting a drumstick à la Paal Nilssen-Love. Yet though Pröll is indeed a powerhouse player, Feichtmair’s saxophone is sometimes tender – not an adjective that would often be applied to Gustafsson. And though as burly and bald as Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, Winter plays cello rather than upright bass. There are moments when one misses the heft provided by the larger body of the upright, but it also makes for a more unusual sound picture. And the album as a whole, contemplative but never complacent, is intriguing.
