The sound of surf and seagulls usher us into the sunny world of an up-and-coming Greek guitarist regularly heard around London with drummer Sirkis's trio and various F-ire lineups. An articulate player whose clean picking reflects the virtues of Mediterranean folk artistry, Tassos gives his nimble llnes a Methenyesque precision and a chordal richness that suggests unorthodox tuning. He can also move into John McLaughlin territory when he puts a little extra dirt into his amplifier mix, as in ‘Out and About’, but not of course with Supermac's legendary intensity and ferocious energy. The trouble with not being a monster like McLaughlin is that the trio format will sound a little bare at times, a problem the leader himself seems to appreciate. A fuller harmonic basis is achieved when his guitar goes beneath the guest trumpet of Kenny Wheeler or over the guest guitar of Johni Parricelli, which unfortunately happens only twice in this set of eight Spiliotopouolos originals. Helping to fill the gaps is Stavi's resononant double-bass and the assured drumming of Sirkis, the left-handed gun from Gilad Atzmon's group. They manage to give the music a light, frothy swing even in jazz-rock mode. Low-key but civilised fusion.
