Terri Lyne Carrington's current purple patch is one of the most gratifying things to have happened in jazz in recent times. Having secured a Grammy Award in the Best Jazz Vocal Album category for her stunning 2011 album, The Mosaic Project, Carrington then became the first female artist to win a Grammy in the Best Jazz Instrumental Album category for her 2013 release, Money Jungle: Provocative In Blue. The drummer, vocalist, composer and bandleader's latest, The Mosaic Project: Love and Soul, puts a soul-jazz spin on the 2011 album, presenting a similarly stellar cast of female vocalists and instrumentalists. Featuring Natalie Cole's mellifluous vocal over a thunderous drum ‘n’ bass groove, album opener ‘Come Sunday’ provides a dexterous nod to her Ellington homage. Chaka Khan then offers another complete reinvention of a standard, ‘I'm a Fool to Want You’. Other highlights include the Afro-Latin breakdown that suddenly lights up ‘Somebody Told a Lie’, beautifully sung by Valerie Simpson; Lalah Hathaway's vulnerable, imploring vocals on the Carrington original ‘This Too Will Pass’, plus Lizz Wright's beguiling take on Patrice Rushen's ‘When I Found You’, with Rushen herself sharing keyboard duties with Rachel Z.
