This follow-up to The Baylor Project's acclaimed, twice Grammy-nominated 2017 debut album, The Journey, presents nine originals and two covers heard back to back – a beautiful reboot of ‘Love Makes Me Sing’, a song penned by R&B singer-songwriter Michael Wykoff which featured on his 1980 album Come To My World, graced here by a gorgeous string arrangement by Geoffrey Keezer, plus a stunning take on Wayne Shorter's ‘Infant Eyes’, from his iconic 1966 Blue Note album, Speak No Evil, which features Jean Baylor's original lyrics.
Musically, lyrically, emotionally, Generations is an album which is impossible not to love. From the scene-setting boogaloo shuffle of ‘Strivin’ and the glorious vocal harmonies of ‘Walk On By’ to the blues-inflected attestation against racial injustice ‘2020’ and the dazzling, Monk-inspired ‘Do You Remember This?’, the Baylors’ many-splendoured artistry thrills at every turn. ‘We Swing (The Cypher)’ is a bona fide standout in which Jean Baylor is joined by fellow vocalists Dianne Reeves and Jazzmeia Horn in a magnificent paean to fortitude and love. The indescribably beautiful ‘Only Believe’, featuring Jamison Ross on vocals, provides a final, touching benediction. Generations is a feast for the ears and the soul.
