Even relatively ropey engineering – Dyani's bass is reduced to little more than a whisper when the ensemble is at full tilt – can't detract from the infectious joy of the Blue Notes. This whole gig is infused by an electricity that turns to a veritable urgency at times, proof that the pioneering London-based South Africans loosely paralleled the 1960s “New Music” exponents from America. Whether or not the band is taking things ‘out’ or not matters much less than the rousing folk sensibility of the music, which is underlined in no uncertain terms by the traditional ‘Lonta Uyagula (‘The Poor Child Is Sick’), a piece ignited by a similar fire to the one that burns in gospel music. In a startling overture all of the band deliver a series of hollers, chants and cries against Moholo-Moholo's ferociously funky drums, prodding and pulling at the agitated groove before the piece billows out into a fluid, rollicking blues where McGregor ups the ante with some beautifully syncopated keyboard stabs. Throughout the recording the mix is a problem, and towards the end of the disc the prolonged absence of Moholo-Moholo's snare, drowned out by hissing cymbals, begins to grate. Yet the quality of the playing and the sheer vivacity of the performance are such that the lo-fiaudio cannot bring down the natural high created by an irrepressible and legendary ensemble.
