For many, this is where the story really begins. Though Adderley had been recording regularly since 1955, it was immediately following his year and a half stint with Miles Davis (which included the Kind of Blue sessions), that this Floridian found his true path by relaunching his own quintet on Riverside – so no fancy outings with strings or singers, it was a fresh start on a new label fronting a straightahead soul jazz quintet with brother Nat that was to dictate his future. This double CD, documents part of the quintet's opening account with Riverside; a brace of ‘live’ albums taped at two of the West Coast's prestigious clubs – San Franciso's Jazz Workshop and the famed Lighthouse at Hermosa Beach, bookended by the Them Dirty Blues studio album. Practically, all of the group's early crowd-pleasing ‘hits’ are here to be enjoyed, including ‘This Here’, ‘Dat Dere’, ‘Work Song’, ‘Jeannine’, ‘Them Dirty Blues’, ‘Del Sasser’ and ‘Sack O'Woe’ (‘Lighthouse’) highlighted as much by Victor Feldman's rolling piano as that of the interaction between Cannonball and Nat. Be it on location or in a studio, this infectious quintet was always a joy to behold and the passing years haven't in any way diminished their original impact.
