We Are Busy Bodies follow last year's excellent Armitage Road by Heshoo Beshoo with another essential release from the mid 1970s. The Drive were formed from the core of that group – the brothers Sithole – and show how one set of players evolved into another musical vehicle all the while keeping the same basic components of their previous incarnation. Above all, that means a particular leisure and lightness of touch, as the melodies unfold casually over township rhythms that are effortlessly seductive.
When the saxophones tighten in close harmony over harpsichord-like electric keyboards the charm factor increases tenfold, especially on the title track where the ensemble pushes towards a mild funk-rock flavour all the while keeping its local identity intact. Although the improvisations are effective this is really a showcase for the band as well as the soloists, making the point that the whole was greater than the sum of the parts. The Drive also has the distinction of being one of the first groups to feature legendary pianist Bheki Mseleku, and hearing the future star on synths and organ adds more cachet to what is a fascinating chapter in African musical history.
