Formed by baritone saxophone players Mats Gustafsson and Kjetil Møster, The End are an intense, hi-energy free jazz/altrock collective whose creative manifesto involves going against the grain and causing as much friction as possible. As the opening track on their debut album clearly testifies, The End mean business as both baritones clash over the screaming guitar of Anders Hana, whose presence adds an extra frisson of menace and electrified threat to the proceedings. This full-on intro gradually subsides into ‘Translated Slaughter’ and ‘Don't Wait’, both of which are further illuminated by Sofia Jernberg's infectious vocal that roams through the set like a restless spirit. Here shades of Gil Scott-Heron rip alongside the voice-as-instrument treatments of Linda Sharrock, Yoko Ono and Patty Waters, as Jernberg courageously weathers the pounding sonic storm that the rest of the group are raining around her. The highlight, however, is the brief ‘Rich And Poor’, a notquite-a-minute sound sketch that neatly encapsulates the group's distinctively alternative approach to playing improvised music.
