There's quite a buzz around Pedrito Martinez's quartet, who have been providing the entertainment at Guantanamera, a Cuban restaurant in midtown Manhattan, for the past few years and pulling in some fairly upscale diners – Eric Clapton and Quincy Jones among them – with their remarkably malleable music: Afro-Cuban, R&B, gospel, flamenco and various other genres and subgenres are seamlessly sewn together on this impressive debut. Martinez is among the planet's finest Afro-Latin hand percussionists – he's played on more than 100 recordings in the past decade and a half, including several Grammy nominees and one winner – and has been hailed as combining a ‘voice like thunder, hands like lightning’. Martinez shares lead vocal duties with the group's pianist Ariacne Trujillo, who first made her name as a child-prodigy concert pianist but lays down irresistible grooves here. The disc has more guests than your average Michelin-starred eatery has dishes on its menu dégustation: Gary Schreiner blows chromatic harmonica on a latinedup take on The Jackson 5's ‘I'll Be There’; then there's Wynton Marsalis, John Scofield, and even words from actor Matt Dillon.
