If anyone tells you this is just another all-star studio pickup group, just to earn a few dollars playing maybe a couple of originals, some standards, some blues and ballads, ignore them. Because you'd be missing out on some really marvellous music. The Power project was initiated by veteran bassist Peter Washington. He's come up with an unusual frontline-up of trumpet and vibes, tastefully conceived by Jeremy Pelt and the often shamefully-overlooked Steve Nelson. The new compositions – three by Pelt, two by the very melodically-minded Grissett and one by Stewart – are totally ‘now’ and bring out the best in every member. Jeremy's opener, ‘Look at Here’, is a disguised beguiling blues, his ‘Sage’ an up-tempo hard swinger, while ‘Asconer’ could have come from the Davis/Shorter songbook. Grissett's ‘Heard's Word’, which has been recorded before, has great changes, while ‘Mr Wiggleworm’ (Danny's nickname when he was a kid) has a quirky rhythm pattern that stays with you, as do many of the new melodies. Of the remaining three tracks, the one ballad (Burke and Van Heusen's ‘But Beautiful’) contains a simply heartbreaking performance with half chorus solos all round. The most exciting track is Bill Stewart's tune, ‘Tincture’, where everyone stretches out and takes a lot of risks, underscored by a superbly swinging rhythm section. The closer is a relaxed treatment of Monk's ‘We See’ and then it's all over. A really thoroughly enjoyable record, which is totally recommended.
