Scott kept a trio going for a decade or so, at first with Tony Crombie on drums, later succeeded by the young South African, Bobby Gein. This previously unreleased session dates from a period in 1974 when the trio was out on tour appearing this time for Jazz In The Icebox, a venture run by pianist John Critchinson (later a long-term Scott sideman, of course) and illustrator Jack Pennington, located at The White Hart pub, in Ford, Wiltshire. Simon Spillett’s superb (and very lengthy) booklet essay doesn’t explain the provenance of this tape but suffice it to say that it catches the trio in imperious form, the recorded sound quite acceptable, even if it gives Gein’s very clattery drums too great a prominence. Carr is on fire throughout, unleashing the Hammond’s prowling power and emitting a constant barrage of sound, while exercising restraint on the ballads. Scott is similarly inspired, tenor foremost, but also soloing at length on soprano, this best observed on a lyrical version of ‘What’s New’, with Carr rumbling quietly in the background. Some months before this same trio had recorded for RCA, the resulting LP Scott at Ronnie’s yet to be reissued on CD. Unsurprisingly several of the pieces recorded then reappear here. The overall effect is of vigour, especially from Carr and Gein, Scott homing in on each piece with his customary intensity, this despite, as Spillett points out, all sorts of disturbances in his personal life. Treat this as a valuable example of a Scott line-up that allowed him to play as he pleased, unfettered and fruitful.
