This public-domain expansion of the classic Prestige album adds a couple of related tracks from Blue Note sessions otherwise mainly by larger groups, namely ‘I’ll Follow You’ and both takes of ‘Ask Me Now’ – but not the 1947 Blue Note trio, whose master takes at least would have fitted well here. Hence the meat of the album is the Prestige material, with the original recorded versions of ‘Nutty’, ‘Blue Monk’, ‘Bemsha Swing’, ‘Reflections’, ‘Trinkle Tinkle’, ‘Bye-Ya’, ‘Monk’s Dream’ and ‘Little Rootie Tootie’. There’s hardly a need to say anything more, except that there are also brilliant and idiosyncratic versions of three song standards of the 1930s, ‘Sweet And Lovely’ (with its chromatic reharmonisation), ‘These Foolish Things’ (wildly discordant enunciation of the melody) and the thoughtful ‘Just A Gigolo’. The last-named, completing the Blue Monk session, is actually not a trio but unaccompanied, deprived of the otherwise stimulating contributions of Roach and more often Blakey. Still, with music this good, who’s counting?
