French bassist Girard turns 40 this year, and his belated solo debut imagines its tracks as staging posts on an already artistically full life. Father Bruno was violinist in lauded French gypsy jazz-folk band Bratsch before Théo was born (fils joined père as bassist for Bratsch’s last years, including a farewell gig commemorated with the climactic trumpet glide and rhythmic bustle of ‘Théâtre du Soleil’). Girard’s own long experience in diverse bands lets him lead this trio – including trans-Channel drummer Seb Rochford – in confident, concise melodies, on an album full of space and atmosphere. Moodily slurred bass on ‘1993’ nods to that year’s jazz-leaning hip hop’s impact on the teenage Girard, but Antoine Berjeaut’s rasping New Orleans trumpet touches could be King Louis’ 1920s cornet. The closing ‘La poésie des camions’, a song from another old Girard band, Sibiel, sounds like a muscular elegy, rounding out 30YearsFrom’s quietly vibrant and theatrical life-cycle.
