Do you remember when bands like Queen used to proclaim proudly on their album sleeves: ‘No synthesisers were used in the making of this record’? No? Then either you're too young (it was the 1970s) – in which case enjoy your youth while you can; it won't last! Or you're too old – in which case don't worry about it, keep enjoying your Frank Sinatra discs. Or you just didn't (or don't) like rock music – in which case you can stop reading now because you probably won't like or really understand this new release from Thierry Maillard. I have to say I do (and did) like rock music and I'm not sure I entirely understand it. It's essentially a celebration of the 1970s and 80s and the (mildly controversial) heyday of synthesizers and analogue keyboards, and at its heart are a series of songs by Supertramp, in particular from Breakfast in America, one of the first albums Maillard, then a student of the classical piano, bought. Moog Project is busy, with some great, energetic soloing, and taking full-on delight in the extravagant sounds and noisy wackiness of the instruments to hand. A contender for the top spot on my ‘Strangest Album of the Year’ list.
