Three Fall, formed in 2008, release their second CD on ACT’s Young German Jazz series that was started by the label in 2005. The brass and percussion trio supported Trombone Shorty on his German tour quite recently and they are similarly party people with a taste for outgoing brassy dance grooves and playfully convivial music. Their previous album titled On A Walkabout saw them reimagine the songs of the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. On the follow up Realise! the trio turn to largely original material, written by trombonist Til Schneider and reedsman Lutz Streun, aside from a few covers that shows further enthusiasms for popular rock music by the likes of Coldplay (‘The Scientist’), Rage Against The Machine (‘Killing in the Name’) and Nirvana (‘Lithium’). They hit a typical brass band groove, with an imaginative blend of influences ranging from N’Orleans marching bands, Blaxploitation funk, dub reggae, avant-cabaret, African and hip hop – with saxophonist Streun doing a fine imitation of a DJ scratching – just one example of his and trombonist Schneider’s talents for creating effective vocalised avant garde effects. Overdubs help to capture a fuller ensemble sound at times and although they are probably a lot rawer live and in the flesh, the trio is a highly musical one all the same.
