Saxophonist Fuller made an excellent impression when she guested on Sean Jones’ first Mack Avenue album and has continued to develop her craft with sheer hard work ever since. She is currently an important member of Beyonce's touring band and taking solo spots on her records, as well as maintaining her own all-girl quartet between tours. This is her second Mack Avenue CD as leader and a big step forward in her career. She's arguably the most striking girl jazz altoist since Vi Redd and plays passionately throughout. She's also brought in six very varied originals, all harmonically challenging, with the title tune probably the most complex in terms of time changes and ‘Clear Mind’ stands out for its strong melodic line. These are also two standards – a highly individual reinterpretation of ‘My Shining Hour’ and an emotive, sometimes Parker-derived take on the song that Roy Eldridge first made his own, ‘I Can't Get Started’. Her sister Shamie is a fine pianist, while Thompson (also in Beyonce's band) will soon be giving Cindy Blackman some competition. Of the guests, Sean Jones is at his best on his four tracks, McBride makes very personal statements on his two, while vibesman Wolf (like McBride) helps make ‘Started’ special. Don't worry – the tap dancer's only on for 29 seconds! Ms Fuller is a very determined and ambitious young musician. We'll hear a lot more of her in the future.
